As the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon gather in Yaounde ahead of their double-header against Gabon on the 5th and 9th of September, Somen A Tchoyi was the only one in the 22 Europe based players to score for his club this weekend.
He thundered in a header to score the second goal for Red Bulls Salzburg that beat KSV Superfund 3-0 in the Austrian superleague. The Bulls are now topping the league in Austria.
Samuel Eto’o played his most elaborate game in an Inter shirt (although he did not score) when the Italian champions destroyed their city rivals Milan 4-0. He gave width, depth and fluidity to Inter’s game. He obtained a penalty when Gatusso fouled him in the 18 yard box which, Milito scored.
The other Strikers
In Portugal, Albert Meyong Ze contributed to Sporting Braga’s 3-1 victory over his former club Belenenses. He was not on target but remained creative. It was the third consecutive victory for Braga in the Portuguese league this season.
Alo’o Efoulou also played 90 minutes for Nancy in the French Ligue 1. Unfortunately they were beaten 3-1 by Lyon and his performance was considered as below average. The French sports paper L’Equipe gave him a 4 on 10 rating.
The only foward who started on the bench this weekend was Achille Webo. His Real Marjoca side beat newly promoted Xerez, 2-nil. But Webo only came in at the 70th minute when both goals had been scored.
Some of the strongest performances by Cameroonians in Europe this weekend came from midfielders. Alexandre Song was at the centre of a 3-man Arsenal midfield that practically destroyed its Manchester United counterpart in the cruch game of the English Premier League. Unfortunately for Song and his mates, United came from a goal down to beat them 2-1.
Also playing as the anchor in-front of the defence in a 3-man midfield, Stephane Mbia also impressed. The French sports paper L’Equipe gave him a 6 on 10 rating. Niether Marseille nor Bordeaux were able to score in the biggest game of the French season so far.
With Alex Song and Stephane Mbia in such forme, Jean Makoun should be worried about his place in the Lions’ starting line-up. He was a 68th minute substitute in Lyon’s victory over Nancy. However, he was more involved in Lyon’s midweek success (3-1) against Anderlecht in the Champions league play-offs.
Enoh Eyong Tarkang controlled the Ajax Amsterdam midfield as the Dutch giants rattled 3 goals past Heracles without conceding any in a league duel in Holland.
Glasgow Celtic became joined league leaders with Rangers FC after defeating Hibernian 1-0 in the Scotish Premier League. Cameroon’s Landry Nguemo displayed power and skill in the centre of the pack for Celtic. He was booked in the process.
Daniel Ngom Kome played 87 minutes for Tenerife against Zaragoza in the Spanish La Liga. But Ngom’s recently promoted side were beaten 1-0.
The defenders… and goalkeepers
Captain Rigobert Song of Trabonzspor led his men to a 1-1 tie in the fourth day of play in the Turkish premier league. Cameroon’s most capped player was also skipper when his Turkish club beat Toulouse 1-0 in the Europa league play-offs last Thursday.
Meanwhile, 19-year-old Nicolas Nkoulou was an unused substitute for the second consecutive weekend. His club Monaco were beaten 1-0 by FC Sochaux.
Andre Bikey, who partnered Nkoulou (as centre-back) during the friendly in Austria last August 12th, played the full 90 minutes for Burnley that was flogged 3-nought by Chelsea in the English Premier League on Saturday.
The two French-born Cameroonians of Tottenham Hotspur – Sebastien Bassong and Assou-Ekotto – continued to glow with their club which beat Birmingham City. Spurs are joint leaders with Chelsea.
Geremi Njitap’s Newcastle FC play on Monday night against Leicester City in the second tier of English football. Geremi will be hoping to start as he did against Huddersfield Town on Wednesday in the League Cup. He even scored on that occasion.
In Switzerland, Binya’s Neuchatel Xamax will be taking on Grasshoppers Zurich this Monday night.
It was a mix bag for the goalkeepers this weekend. Idriss Carlos Kameni’s Espanyol Barcelona were beaten 1-0 by Athletico Bilbao in Spain, while Souleymanou Hamidou’ Kayserispor defeated Denilzspor 3-0 in Turkey.
