Cameroon are now the 11th best football nation in the World according to FIFA rankings released on Friday. The last time Cameroon reached such heights was in November 2006.
By this token the Indomitable Lions remain the number 1 team in Africa followed by the Elephants of Ivory Coast on spot number 16 in the World. The Super Eagles of Nigeria are 22nd on the world rankings and 3rd in Africa. They are followed by Algeria and Egypt in that order.
The FIFA rankings were created in 1993 and Cameroon’s average position is 28. But the country’s worst ranking was in April 1997 when they held the 62nd position. The Lions were suffering under the weight of reconstruction.
They were barely able to win games and a number of players who wore the green, red and yellow colours then never really became household names. Do you remember Fabrice Morreau? I watched him score the penalty that qualified Cameroon to the Africa Cup Nations in 1998. What about names like Njang Sunday, Mangane, Tchango and Mimboe Tobie?
Can you remember those players who featured prominently for the Indomitable Lions while the team was in soccer wilderness between 1994 and 1998?
